A lovely old map here - LinkExternal link
Copland's Dock HY2509 : Copland's Dock - Stromness, on the far side, is about (beginning 2012) to undergo an expensive development to support the growing renewables industry.
See HY2508 : Watch this space
Work is in progress early 2013 - see HY2509 : Copland's Dock progress
The walled enclosure is part of the old dock but also hides the site of the historic Whitehouse (of which, confusingly, there are two in Stromness)
"Nearer to Hamnavoe is Copland's Dock, site of the Copland family's boatyard constructed after the death of John Stanger. That would therefore date from the late 19C. It didn't even last to the Great War. The boatyard was built where Whitehouse (aka White House) once stood. Merchant William Gow, father of Pirate Gow, had a house and garden in Cairston" LinkExternal link
