The strip of tarmac was the apron in front of the aircraft hangars. It dates from the earliest days of aviation being built by Southport Council and rented to a local pioneer aviator by the name of John Gaunt in 1910.

During the first World War it was used by the Royal Naval Air Service, and during the Second World War Mosquito aircraft were assembled here.

During the fifties and into the early years of the sixties Southport Aero Club operated from here
