High Scrubs - ground feature - view SE
Browns Lane leads from near Cholesbury through to Hastoe. At this point it runs between High Scrubs to the northeast and Haresgarden Wood to the southwest. For some distance it is tracked on the High Scrubs side by a sunken feature in the ground which runs parallel to the lane - in places there are at least two of these features evident. This photograph is looking along this feature. There is nothing on the maps to suggest what this is or was - it looks quite similar to the remains of Grim's Ditch (see SP9209 : Grim's Ditch - view WSW et al) so perhaps it is an ancient earthwork. Alternatively as it is parallel to the lane, perhaps it is the former course of this lane - or again it might be the result of former husbandry of the land. The view in the opposite direction can be seen here SP9208 : High Scrubs - ground feature - view NW which perhaps shows the depression more distinctly.
Browns Lane :: SP9307
Browns Lane is a public byway open to all traffic from March to October inclusive, but is effectively a bridleway from November to April.
It meanders in a roughly northwesterly direction from Kiln Lane north of Cholesbury at SP93310783 to the hamlet of Hastoe at SP91801937, rising 50m from 183m to 233m in the process. At its Hastoe end it has a number of houses.
For much of its length it passes through heavily wooded countryside with Haresgarden Wood to its left (SW) and first High Scrubs then Shrubb's Wood on its right (NE).
