Igneous outcrop
Detailed view of the outcrop LinkExternal link near the Carreg-y-Big standing stone. This rock was formed by a volcanic eruption about 450 million years ago. The magma contained large amounts of gases, which were released explosively when reaching the surface, leaving the rock to solidify into many small fragments. This is part of the Ordovician Llyn-y-Gafr formation.
