Colintraive and the Bute ferry
Colintraive and the Bute ferry
The frequent ferry crossing from Rhubodach at the northern end of the Isle of Bute to Colintraive is at only 400 metres certainly the shortest and cheapest way to get to the mainland, but the landing is in the remote and thinly populated Cowal peninsula which is still a long way from the main centres of population of Scotland. The straits are so narrow that in earlier centuries, livestock were regularly expected to swim across.
