The two railway bridges, Temple Hirst
The nearer bridge carries the East Coast Main Line (ECML) on its relative new course on what is known as 'The Selby Diversion'. The further bridge is the old line of the ECML to Selby. The railway was diverted in 1983 to avoid disruption from coal mining North of Selby; it also avoided awkward junctions, sharp curves and a swing bridge in Selby allowing train services to be speeded up.
