Water turbines at Cressbrook
Water turbines at Cressbrook
Although commonly referred to as Cressbrook Mill this is actually three conjoined mills - Arkwright's, Wye and Cressbrook and the turbines are at the end of Wye Mill with its pediment and cupola. On the left is a 1900 built vortex turbine installed in the 24 wide wheel pit. This had a 39 runner and operated over a 26 head at 146 rpm. On the right is a 1912 Trent turbine a mixed flow Francis type with two 40 diameter runners and operated over a 24.7 head at 149 rpm. There was a third turbine but there is no sign of this. The turbines were all made by Gilbert Gilkes of Kendal.

The turbines are in poor condition and the supply pipes are in even worse condition. This site would be ideal for hydroelectric generation - either with refurbished old plant or new plant (away from the historic machinery).

The mills are now housing.
