A view of Queen St with the "Cineworld" glass building in the distance. The Queen's Chambers building incorporating the newsagent's shop is of particular historic interest insofar as Fothergill Watson (1841-1928)- who later changed his name to Watson Fothergill - a leading local architect occupied offices in it. He designed houses, banks, churches, shops & warehouses; many of which still survive. He worked in the Gothic revival and Old English vernacular styles that were popular in Victorian times, loosely based on medieval churches & castles and 16th & 17th century Tudor buildings. In 1893 Fothergill had to vacate his Clinton St offices because the land was needed for the approach to the new Victoria Station. As a result he built these confident, flamboyant Gothic style offices in Queen St. He planned the ground floor as a self-contained shop that he let out providing him with the income that he needed to pay for his 2nd & 3rd floor offices.
