TQ1972 : Pond Slade, Richmond Park

Pond Slade, Richmond Park
Pond Slade, Richmond Park
Richmond Park's SSSI status came about in recognition of two principal features: its lowland acid grassland and its veteran trees. Pond Slade, lying south-west of the Pen Ponds, is one of the Park's most extensive areas of acid grassland.

In this view I am sighting along a ditch towards the birches of Pond Plantation - beyond which are the Ponds. Much drainage work was carried out here during the 19th century. Before that - and even more so, before the creation of the Pen Ponds in the 18th century - this area must have been very much wetter.

Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve.
