The Old Butcher's Shop, Middle Row, Bletchingley

A similar (though grander) old butcher's shop still trades in Reigate (not far away), and - interestingly enough - that too has an awning over the pavement. From pre-1914 photos of butchers' shops it is clear that carcases were regularly hung outside the premises - concern for hygiene must have been very different in those days. No doubt the awning was fitted with hooks for hanging up carcases, and also provided some protection from the weather.
