Presumably there was once a cross at this point, where travellers from Hope to Edale would cross the ridge. It was not so very long ago that workers living in Castleton walked across to the mill at Edale every morning and back every evening!

Today many walk the ridge between Lose Hill and Mam Tor purely for recreation.
