Linden Court sheltered housing
Looking SE from Gresty Terrace. This sheltered housing development is run by Wulvern Housing.
This property was built between 1881 and 1908 as Linden Grange, home to the Wilding family headed by J.W. Wilding J.P. a Confectioner Baker and Crewe Councillor.
Using free to access archives, the census for 1881 has the family living at 9 to 11 Victoria Street, Monks Coppenhall. The household at that time comprised John W. Wilding 40, his wife Elizabeth 32, son William 5, daughters Mary 2 and L.E. 0. They had an assistant, four apprentices and a servant.
The Municipal Year Book 1908 lists John as a Crewe Councillor, living at Linden Grange.
The building was converted for use as Crewe Borough Maternity Home in 1921, and became Linden Grange Maternity Hospital in 1933 until its closure in 1972.
I was born here in January 1956.
