NN5162 : Burning heather

Burning heather
Burning heather
Heather burning near Loch Ericht - this is done to keep heather in a vigorous condition and may be carried out between autumn and spring. The burning procedure does not damage the heather's roots, and the heat may shock heather seed into germination. A worker can be seen in this image with a tool used to prevent the fires from growing out of control.
