Dornoch Cathedral
Dornoch Cathedral
The Cathedral was founded in the 13th century by Gilbert de Moravia, Bishop of Caithness. It suffered from fire damage in the sixteenth century, was partially restored in the seventeenth century and the restoration was completed in the eighteenth century by architects William Leslie and Alexander Coupar at the instigation of Elizabeth, Countess of Sutherland. More details at LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) and at LinkExternal link. A cathedral, strictly speaking, is the seat of a bishop, but the Church of Scotland does not have bishops so although it is still called 'Cathedral', it is no longer a cathedral in the original meaning of the word.
