Birkenhead Park was designed by Joseph Paxton who also designed the Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibititon of 1851 and Princes Park, Liverpool. It opened on 5 April 1847 and is regarded as the first public park in the world and it is widely accepted that, after visiting the park in 1850 during a tour of Europe, American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted incorporated many of the features he observed into his design for New York's Central Park.
