Geograph - photograph every grid square

This square is in the coastal plain adjacent to Duddon Estuary. It is in Countryside Character Area 7 - West Cumbrian Coastal Plain. Glacial deposits overlie Silurian shales and slate, producing marshland next to the sea. The square is in the former Broughton West CP, now Duddon CP, in South Lakeland DC east of the Duddon, and Millom Outer CP in Copeland DC west of the Duddon.

The road through the square became an A-road in 1992, in order to bypass Broughton-in-Furness.

The disused Coniston Branch of the Furness Railway runs to the west of the main road and continuing to the NE corner. It was was built in 1859 by a separate company in order to export copper from the Coniston mines, and was taken over by the Furness railway in 1862, by which time the output of ore was declining. It closed in 1957.

Greety Gate (farm) was Greedy Gate on OS 1889 and was mentioned by that name in a newspaper of 1778. It was perhaps built after the flood-bank was constructed; it is marshland between the bank and the estuary (and also on the west bank of the estuary) and fields drained by ditches between the bank and the main road. The farm is sited at the end of a ridge.
