Portrait of James VI in Old College
Founded by Royal Charter in 1582, the University was the fourth in Scotland after St. Andrews (1413), Glasgow (1451) and Aberdeen (1495). Though established from a bequest by Bishop Robert Reid of St. Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall, Orkney, funding was soon taken over by Edinburgh's Town Council, making it Britain's first civic university. In 1617 the 'Tounis College', as it was known, was renamed King James' College in honour of the ruling monarch. The portrait is the work of the court painter, Adam de Colone. Compare this with a portrait of the younger James painted by his father. NT2573 : Portrait of the young James VI, Edinburgh Castle
