Doorus Youth Hostel in 1979
Doorus Cottage was built around 1860 for a family of exiled French aristocrats, the de Basterots. It became a centre of the Irish literary revival where W.B. Yeats, Lady Gregory, Douglas Hyde and George Russell (Æ) got together to plan a National Theatre for Ireland (which was to materialise as Dublin's Abbey Theatre). In 1961 the property was made over to An Óige as a youth hostel.
The cottage and its adjacent walled garden are seen here on a bleak March evening, before its restoration and extension as shown in M3413 : Doorus Youth Hostel, Doorus Townland.
