Hare's-tail Cotton-grass (Eriophorum vaginatum), Cheviot
Commonly seen slightly later in the season with the development of its cottony white seed heads NU0228 : Hare's-tail Cottongrass
It is a common early coloniser of bare peat gullies and disturbed bogs. Human trampling along the former path to Cheviot in wet conditions severely damaged the vegetation cover leaving large areas of bare peat. This has been addressed by the provision of a flagstone path in both directions NT9120 : Flagstone path east of Cheviot summit and replanting of native species.
