SK2890 : Alder roots in the river Loxley

near to Dungworth, Sheffield, Great Britain

Alder roots in the river Loxley
Alder roots in the river Loxley
Alder can form a tangle of adventitious roots when periodically submerged in water. The water level of the river Loxley is controlled by several reservoirs upstream and millponds with sluice gates downstream of this point. The resulting flow conditions favour the formation of such a root system. Unlike normal roots, adventitious roots grow from a pre-existing stem of the plant, are capable of photosynthesis and do not usually support the tree structurally. They allow the plant to reach nutrients independent of the water level.
(Thanks to Robin Stott to pointing me to this interesting phenomenon during a common walk after the Geograph conference.)
