Hillsborough Memorial
The Hillsborough disaster occurred during the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest on 15 April 1989 at Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough Stadium. The Hillsborough disaster remains the worst stadium-related disaster in British history with the death of 96 supporters of Liverpool Football Club at the Leppings Lane end of the ground..
The findings of the Taylor Report into the disaster led to the removal of the high wire fences which had been used to prevent fans gaining access to the pitch (an obvious escape route for those being crushed) and to the creation of all-seater stadiums at all major football grounds as well as other improvements such as improving access for emergency vehicles.
This memorial outside the ground was unveiled on the tenth anniversary of the tragedy on 15 April 1999. The inscription reads:
In memory of the 96 men, women, and children who tragically died and the countless people whose lives were changed forever. FA Cup semi-final Liverpool v Nottingham Forest. 15 April 1989. "You’ll never walk alone."
