"The most startling and assertive of all the [Liverpool] university's post-war buildings", opined Pevsner. By Denys Lasdun & Partners, 1963-66. Its concrete and glass exterior was however, in the opinion of Nikolaus Pevsner himself, "a calculated insult to the Late Georgian rectangularity of nearby Abercromby Square". And Mr P. was not retrograde, he would not have been singing from the same hymn sheet as Prince Charles.
The writing on the end wall, an "urban art project", reads "253 babies are born every minute worldwide" and below, "Are you optimistic about the future?" To me it has misanthropic overtones, but I suppose could be read either way.
