Bristol - BS1
The bow of the M.V. Balmoral alongside Prince’s Wharf points the observer in the direction of the Prince’s Street swing bridge. This bridge was erected in 1809 by the Bristol Dock Company on the site of the ancient jib ferry owned by the Dean and Chapter of Bristol Cathedral. (A jib ferry seems likely to have involved a horizontal boom or crane structure that the ferryman would have used to help him to manoeuvre his boat to and fro). This 19th century bridge carries vehicular traffic and separates the harbour from the dock.
