East Hoathly :: TQ5216
The parish of East Hoathly is located in the Low Weald its southern end affording views down to the South Downs whilst to the north it begins to rise as the higher ridges of the Weald come into play. The parish is bounded Framfield to the west, Waldron to the north, Chiddingly to the east and Laughton to the south. The two major settlements in the parish are the village of East Hoathly and the hamlet of Halland with two smaller hamlets called Davis's town and Hawkhurst Common. East Hoathly village lies towards the centre of the parish and is built round a crossing of routes. Halland lies on the western edge of the parish and also grew up around a crossroads. The village was known as The Nursery until 1891 when pressure by the Post Office forced it to change its name to that of the nearby large house. Davis's Town, little more than a collection of cottages, straddles Hollow Lane and probably dates from the medieval period when the more inaccessible parts of the weald were being colonised by those escaping the estates to the south. The word town derives from the old English for village. Hawkhurst Common is a collection of farms once based around the old common which was a mixture of heath and woodland.
