NT2966 : Landfill, Melville

Landfill, Melville
Landfill, Melville
Much of this square is a landfill tip. It's grassed over and used for agriculture now, but the methane produced in the tip is being burned off here. Carbon dioxide is produced, but although notorious, is a far weaker greenhouse agent than methane. More urgently, unlike methane, Carbon dioxide is not explosive. Houses have been built on landfill sites and then later destroyed by a methane build-up exploding.
Look for the blurred skyline due to the refraction in the hot gas plume above the burner.
