Bristol - BS8
The Boyces Avenue cul-de-sac in Clifton, Bristol 8. The renamed Clifton Shopping Arcade was opened in April 1879 by Joseph King, a self-taught architect, entrepreneur and builder as “King's Clifton Bazaar & Winter Garden”. It was however, an instant flop. King had hoped to let spaces in his arcade and act as the manager of the enterprise but there were no takers and he went bankrupt. The property was sold in December 1879 and became The Wilsonia Depot, selling magnetic belts, corsets, vests, spine bands and gloves. This venture also failed and it was sold in January 1880 to two brothers named Knee who needed a warehouse for their furniture storage business. After the death of Edward Knee in 1985 (aged 92), the whole arcade was found to be unsafe. However, it has now been restored to its former glory and now houses a mixture of antique shops and boutiques.
