There is believed to have been a cross or marker stone in this position for many centuries, but this stone is marked 1737. Pack horse routes then crossed the hills. Routes from Edale to Sheffield and Brough to Glossop met here, high above what we now see as the Ladybower Reservoir. In earlier days the Romans built a road this way from Brough.

Since 1984 this has been Grade II listed.
