Woods at Colgrain
Woods at Colgrain
These are the woods that, as shown on the map, form a strip on the north-eastern side of the NS3280 : A814 at Colgrain. The 1:25000 map shows a track running through these woods; the track can still be discerned, but it is overgrown: NS3280 : Old track through the woods.

The main carpeting vegetation in this photograph is the very common NS3878 : Dog's Mercury. The plant is highly poisonous; while it is hard to see why anyone would wish to eat it, this has happened on occasion, when the species has been mistaken for the edible NJ3135 : Brooklime (Veronica beccabunga). On incidents of poisoning resulting from this confusion, see, for example, pages 256-257 of Richard Mabey's "Flora Britannica"; the same work notes that the plant spreads rapidly by means of rhizomes, forming "clonal patches".
