Jordan Well

A view from the tower of St Michael's church. Ringway Whitefriars cuts across the middle distance from left to right. In the foreground is the roof of the Herbert Art Gallery on Jordan Well. On the far side of Jordan Well are a couple of Lanchester Polytechnic buildings housing the library and the civil engineering department. Beyond the gap to the left of the library is the bulk of the Odeon cinema, formerly the Gaumont and, at this time one massive cinema which was later to be subdivided into several smaller cinemas and, later still, to house the performing arts department of Coventry University.

Beyond the ring road, on the left, is a building which started out as a factory for Hotchkiss later taken over by Morris and, by the time of this photo, had been used as tax and social security offices (during which time it lost some height due to a fire in the late 1960s). It was later to be refurbished and become the William Morris building of Coventry University. Immediately to its right are the buildings and chimney on the Gulson Hospital site.

Into the distance are late 19th/early 20th century terraces.
