6 Monks Walk
6 Monks Walk
Monks Walk is a road of mainly 1930s houses built on the grounds of a house originally called Little Doods and later The Wilderness, demolished around 1967 and now the site of flats (see TQ2550 : Monks Court). From 1709 to 1711, it was home of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 3rd Earl of Shaftesbury (his son, the 4th Earl was born there).

From 1731 to 1758, the house was owned by Thomas Bliss, who developed the grounds into a garden, known as "The World in One Acre of Land" - reference is made to it by Daniel Defoe in his Tour of Great Britain.

One of the many features of the garden, and the only one still in situ, was a grotto, which can be seen in the right background of this photo.

In 2011, a proposal was put forward to demolish no 6, the house in this photo, and redevelop the whole site, including removal of the grotto, with two 4 bedroom and eight 2 bedroom dwellings. Planning was refused and concern over the demolition of the grotto led to its grade II listing by English Heritage on 27 March 2012 - see LinkExternal link.
