The Chimney (2)
Rail travellers heading towards TQ3083 : The new entrance hall of Kings Cross Station (2) from the Euston Road will pass admiringly by what must, with the necessary historical perspective, surely become recognised as an iconic example of early 21st century functionalist neo-brutalism.

With one seemingly effortless stroke of genius, the quasi-elliptical eponymous “chimney” form offers poignant reminders not only of those unmistakeable behemoths of steam, the streamlined Gresley Pacifics TQ3186 : A Gresley A4 Streamliner at Finsbury Park that once provided the motive power for The Flying Scotsman TQ3083 : The 'Flying Scotsman' express enters King's Cross at the end of its non-stop run from Edinburgh - but also of the very purpose of those chimneys: the structure houses the ventilation equipment for King’s Cross / St. Pancras underground station.

The perceptive onlooker will be further impressed by how the ultra-modern concept with its minimalist steel exterior cladding provides a focal point for the otherwise featureless pedestrian plaza while almost subliminally paying homage to the graceful curves of the arches in the Grade I listed TQ3083 : The front of King's Cross station designed by Lewis Cubitt LinkExternal link to the east.

Truly a building of which the redevelopers of King’s Cross station can justifiably be proud.
