Corsewall Lighthouse
Corsewall Lighthouse
The lighthouse was built between 1815 and 1817 by Robert Stevenson. It is 111 feet high and its light can be seen at a distance of 22 miles.
Over the years it has been witness to a number of shipwrecks. Notable amongst these was the barque "Firth of Cromarty" in 1898, which gave this part of Galloway its own version of Whisky Galore as its cargo of 10,000 worth of whisky came ashore. Over the next two weeks, at least two local men were recorded as dying from alcohol poisoning. It is believed that the wreck still contains some intact bottles of whisky. Indeed, a few years ago a local diver presented an intact bottle still containing whisky to Stranraer Museum.
In November 1970, a number of glass panes in the lamp room of the lighthouse were broken by the supersonic boom from Concorde as it flew on a test flight up the North Channel.
While still housing a functioning automated light monitored remotely from Edinburgh, the remainder of Corsewall Lighthouse is now a hotel and as seen here, is floodlit for part of the time.
