SK4882 : Wales Shopping
I have a number of problems with the above photograph, not with the actual photograph or its composition, but its title, position and description.
Its title, for example, should be
Kiveton Park Shopping,
and not 'Wales Shopping' as while the road shown is Wales Road, the handful of shops in Wales are about 300 to 400 metres behind the photographer, incidentally very near the position of the photographer when taking SK 4783.
Its position is reported to be
9 km from Staveley.
Why that, and not one of the historical positions, ie '__ miles from Sheffield, Worksop, or Rotherham', as Staveley is not a place which is in any way related to the position of Kiveton Park. Indeed, most locals would have little idea where Staveley is, let alone how far away it is.
The description under the photo tells us that the pub on the right, 'The Forge' possibly gets its name from the fact that a forge occupied the site earlier.
The Forge is on the site of the Regal Cinema, which was the only place of entertainment in Kiveton Park and Wales for many years. Kiveton Park, until about the late 1860s, had a population of around 200 to 300 people, so one Blacksmith would have been quite enough to handle the work of the dozen or so farms in the area then, and the only Blacksmith was situated in Manor Road, which actually features in your photograph SK 4783, as the road out of Wales to Low Laithes. Manor Road does not 'go out of Wales' as Low Laithes Farm, the only dwelling at the end of the Road is still in Wales.
The Blacksmith's shop is remembered in the memories of many of the older generation, yet its position is now taken by a newer residence, near the intersection with Storth Lane.
This is a complaint? Oh no, far from it, as I am thrilled with both the quality and subject matter of the local photos, and they are a boon to me, as I live in Australia, having been born in Kiveton Park. Not Wales!!
Michael, keep up the good work!!
