Station and Station Tower, Station Square, Coventry
Writing in 1966, Pevsner described Coventry's as "one of the best recent stations in England". The bridge over the lines continues towards the centre of the photo (at the foot of the tower). It is all clean and spacious (SP3378 : Station, Station Square, Coventry). The listing comments that it is "outstanding architecturally, particularly for its spatial qualities and detailing". Built 1959-62 to the designs of W.R. Headley, Architect for the British Railways Midland Region. Grade II listed.
The alternating bands of grey spandrels and windows give the 1960s tower behind a stripy look. The grid effect is enhanced by strong projecting black horizontals and verticals. Was it the work of W.H. Saunders & Son who did the adjacent Copthall House (SP3378 : Copthall House, Station Square, Coventry)? It was empty at the time, presumably awaiting redevelopment (see also SP3378 : Station Tower and Copthall House, Station Square, Coventry).
Several other pictures on the site show more detail of the station: SP3378 : Coventry station 1979 SP3378 : Booking hall and concourse, Coventry railway station.
