Ellis Mill - Governor

The governor is used to maintain the distance between the stones (which vary in the sub millimetre with speed) to provide an even flour coarseness. The steel rods run off the governor and adjust the tentering beams. It can also be done manually, hence the expression 'rule of thumb' as the miller felt the flour as it came out.

Ellis Mill - Lincoln

Ellis mill is a small towermill in the historic city of Lincoln. The tower was built in 1798 and worked until the 1940s when the machinery was scrapped for the war effort. The mill is named after the last miller, John Ellis.
1974 saw the already derelict mill almost destroyed with a fire. After threat of demolition, a fate seen by the 8 other mills in the area the Lincoln civic trust stepped in for restoration. Machinery was salvaged from other buildings throughout the county. Now the site is a tourist attraction run on a regular basis throughout the year.
