The Wrabness Nature Reserve & Marsh is managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust and was saved from development in 1992 by the Wrabness Nature Reserve Charitable Trust.

It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest

The site was once a former mine depot established in 1921 by the Ministry of Defence. It was closed in 1963.
