Coppiced chestnut tree with new growth
Stour Wood has many sweet chestnut trees, which have been coppiced, i.e. cut back to ground level.

Here you can see multiple new trunks growing from the old stumps, which form the "coppice stool". The original tree will extended its root system as it regenerates from its base. Eventually coppicing will create a ring or circle of trunks as in TM1831 : Circle of trunks: an old coppice stool
