The Pink Oak, or Phytophthora Memorial tree, Delamore Estate
The Pink Oak, or Phytophthora Memorial tree, Delamore Estate
This dead oak tree on the Delamore Estate has had its top part painted pink for the 2012 Delamore Exhibition. The creator is Henry Brudenell-Bruce, who created the Giants Chair near Jays Grave on Dartmoor SX7280 : The Giant's Chair, Natsworthy.
It is a stark reminder of the horrendous Phytophthora ramorum disease, accidentally imported from the USA, that is ravaging the warmer and wetter parts of the UK. It was first identified in 2007 on ornamental rhododendrons in Cornwall, and led to the removal of many plants in gardens such as Heligan. It has subsequently jumped species to bilberry, and now Japanese larch is affected, with some 5000 acres of larch already felled. It is so virulent that even the Dept of Transport has been felling larch this past winter along the verges of the A38 dual carriageway in Devon to try to reduce the spread of the fungus.
