Hemerdon Mine

The opencast pit will eventually provide local employment of until at the very least 2021. The pit, run by Wolf minerals Ltd will extract Wolframite (fe,mn)WO4 and possibly minor cassiterite (Sn02).
The geology is in a granite dyke like intrusion (280ma +/-2ma) surrounded by hornfels. Inside is greisen tourmaline/quartz/wolframite sheeted veins running parallel to the intrusion along with minor barren veins. The stockwork goes down to a depth of 400m. The concentrate will be taken out by one lorry every two days for shipment to Austria. Tungsten is used for tools in Tungsten Carbide alloys. The Hemerdon mine is a world class deposit producing some of the highest concentrate tonnages in the world.
