Chwarel Allt Ddu Quarry
Chwarel Allt Ddu Quarry
An old quarry which has been reclaimed and landscaped. Joined to Dinorwig Quarry by, initially, a horse tramway and, later, a steam tramway, it was worked in tandem with Chwarel Fawr with which it shared its tips and mills. Up to the 1960s there was a very deep and flooded pit where the triangularly shaped grassy area now is. The pit was drained and filled with slate from the nearby tips. A second pit nearby was also filled in and is now used as a football pitch. The backwall of the main pit, or what remains of it, is very popular with the climbing fraternity.
