Cliffs of Árainn
Cliffs of Árainn
The cliffs on the south coast of Árainn (Inishmore), showing a huge rock called "an Aill Bhriste", "the broken cliff", which has broken off from the island and is supported between the cliff and a sea-stack. It is just possible to make out the network of dry-stone walls which cover the island and prevent the wind from blowing away quite all of the soil. Because there still wasn't very much of it, the islands were a less than fertile place to farm, and the inhabitants until the twentieth century used to risk their lives climbing down these cliffs at night to collect seabirds' eggs.
