Stamford was the first conservation area to be designated in England and Wales under the Civic Amenities Act 1967. Much of the town centre was built in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and the Industrial Revolution largely left Stamford untouched. The town is characterized by street after street of timber-framed and stone buildings using local limestone, and it also has five medieval parish churches. Not surprisingly, there are many historical associations in the town. This information board near the top of Barn Hill gives one example.
