Thought to have been built by Symon Scott of Winterburgh, 2nd son of Sir James Scott of Thirlestane, and to whom in 1569 James VI granted a charter of feu-farm. The tower measures 10.1m long by 7.1m wide at the west end & 8.1m wide at the east end. (extract from: The Castles of Lothian & the Borders by Mike Salter).
