Hale Head Lighthouse
Hale Head Lighthouse
150 years ago, before the coming of the railways (and later, the Manchester Ship Canal), the river here was crowded with sailing vessels as the Mersey was an essential supply route for the growing towns of the industrial North-West.

The first lighthouse here was a wooden construction, made around 1838. The present lighthouse was completed in 1907. It is 60 feet high and had a light of 500 candle power. No longer in use, the lenses are at The Maritime Museum in Liverpool whilst the lighthouse itself is now privately owned.
Hale Head
Hale Head is the most southerly point in the county of Lancashire.

No legislation has ever changed the boundaries of Britainís traditional counties; only administrative areas have been changed by Acts of Parliament. The River Mersey is still the boundary between the traditional counties of Lancashire and Cheshire.
