Standing Stone, Machrie Moor

There are numerous standing stones and stone circles on Machrie Moor, as well as cairns, hut circles and other ancient remains, many, such as this standing stone, dating back 4500 years. A small ring of tall stones can be seen in the background. Several of the stones had the intriguing fluted top seen here, presumably simply caused by weathering (4,500 years can produce a lot of weathering in these parts !) - but perhaps the grooves accentuate original markings ?
It is a fine place to visit and a very easy stroll along a path which leaves the road at NR 89503 33014 - there is even off-road parking a few yards away on the other side of the road at NR 8948 3304
This photo was taken at about a quarter to ten at night, showing the amazingly long days at this latitude at this time of year ... especially in such wonderful weather conditions as we enjoyed !
