Winter crops, Paxton
Winter crops, Paxton
Land ploughed, cultivated and sown soon after harvest. Common practice especially in England, and catching on in Scotland, where most barley is still spring sown. Has an environmental cost - reduced winter food supplies for birds and I have seen terrible soil erosion in winter rains. Against this productivity is higher, with the added benefit of a July harvest.
