The old Watch House is the oldest building on King’s College Strand Campus. It houses the centre for Construction Law LinkExternal link. The Old Watch House was until the development of the modern Police Force by Robert Peel, the Watch House for the Parish of St Clement Danes It still bares the
TQ3080 : St Clement Danes Parish Marker. Strand lane is the boundary between the parishes of
St Clement Danes and St Mary-Le-Strand see TQ3080 : St Mary's Marker. The Watchmen or “Charlies” would forgather here before commencing their nightly patrols. The building also had a lock up where those arrested could be held until magistrates could deal with them. The building to the immediate right of the Watch House houses the so called “Roman Bath” which is in the care of Westminster Council on behalf the National Trust. There may be some recycled Roman Bricks in the plunge pool but it is more probably a 17th or 18th Century garden feature or a simply a cistern relating to Arundel House. Above it is King’s College Sports & Social Club LinkExternal link a retreat for staff. The Victorian building in the foreground on the right is the former Norfolk Hotel where legend has it the young gentlemen of KCL could hire rooms by the hour.
