The shore near Dumbarton East
This is a fairly muddy expanse of shore, but it is at least a good place from which to appreciate the nearby hills. In the distant background of this photograph is the edge of the plateau of the Kilpatrick Hills, but there are several nearer hills.
On the right is NS4274 : Dumbuck Quarry, formerly Dumbuck Hill; see that link for more information.
Only slightly to the left of centre is Dumbowie Hill, with its two closely-spaced peaks; like Dumbuck Hill, it is volcanic in origin. Of the two summits of Dumbowie Hill, the one on the right (NS4275 : Dumbowie Hill - the south-eastern summit) is the site of an Iron Age hill-fort: NS4275 : Dumbuie Dun.
Further to the left, with an area of housing in front of it, is Barwood Hill (NS42027565), lower than the other hills mentioned above. The first-edition OS map also shows the name "Dumbar" here; the proprietor of the land used that name, but everyone else in the area knew it as Barwood Hill.
