Weight restriction sign, Bridgefoot, 1874, taken 5 years ago
The Bridgefoot canal bridge crosses the Stratford-upon-Avon Canal where it leaves the canal basin to head north for Birmingham. The bridge was rebuilt by Warwickshire County Council in 1994. This notice dated 1st January 1874 was incorporated into the new parapet. "In pursuance of the Locomotive Act of 1861" the Great Western Railway Company warned that the old bridge was "insufficient to carry any weight beyond the ordinary traffic of the district" and that drivers of heavy locomotives should not attempt to cross it without the prior consent of the company.
