Sir Sampson & Lady Elizabeth de Strelley
Sir Sampson & Lady Elizabeth de Strelley
Marvellous alabaster tomb in the chancel of All Saints' church at Strelley LinkExternal link . Sir Sampson rebuilt the church in 1356 in thanks for his survival from the Black Death and his tomb sits in the centre, directly before the altar. He died in 1390 and Lady Elizabeth in 1405, re-united on their tomb, holding hands, awaiting the Resurrection. His feet rest on a lion and hers on two pet puppies, with fourteen angels holding shields on the chest, once painted with de Strelley ancestral heraldic motifs.
